US proposes fuel efficiency standards for trucks

Washington—The Obama administration on Friday proposed emissions standards for medium- and heavy-duty trucks, buses and tractors in model years 2021-2027 that it said would reduce US consumption of oil by 1.8 billion barrels over the lifetime of the vehicles. The standards are aimed at engine performance, not fuel specifications. “We don’t expect any needed changes on the fuel side,” Janet McCabe, acting associate administrator at the Environmental Protection Agency, said during a conference call with reporters.
