Mumbai-State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp. has kicked off India's first commercial exploration of shale gas with the spudding of its first exploratory well-Jambusar-55-at its Cambay Basin block in Gujarat. The oil ministry in September announced its shale gas exploration policy under which state-owned upstream companies ONGC and Oil India Ltd. are allowed to start exploration and production of shale gas at their existing conventional oil and gas blocks awarded on a nomination basis. Nomination blocks were given to the state-owned E&P companies before India launched the New Exploration Licensing Policy- a competitive bidding method-in 1999.
