Ecuador court refuses to stop enforcement of Chevron ruling

Quito-A court in Lago Agrio, Ecuador, has ruled it will not comply with an international tribunal's order blocking the South American country's judiciary from enforcing an $18 billion environmental damage ruling against Chevron, lawyers for the plaintiffs said Febru- ary 20. "Chevron Corp. has decided not to carry out its right to suspend the execution of the sentence through the setting of a bond," the judges, Juan Carlos Encarnacion, Luis Legna, and Maria Avila, said in their ruling. The ruling will now pass to the National Court, Ecuador's top court, for a final domestic review, they said.
