Tokyo-Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said October 5 it plans to drill four wells to explore methane hydrates in Japanese waters in the second half of fiscal 2011-2012 (April-March), with a view to starting commercial production by 2018. METI’s exploratory drilling is designed to lead to what the ministry said will be the world’s first methane hydrate production test.
