Chevron's Bangladesh output raises concern; US major pumping 670,000 Mcf/d of gas from Bibiyana field

Dhaka, Bangladesh-Chevron's current rate of natural gas production from Bangladesh's Bibiyana field-which has more than tripled in just over two years-has sparked concern among local energy experts that it is "excessive" and threatens the nation's long-term energy security. The US oil giant began producing around 200,000 Mcf/d of gas at Bibiyana-one of the largest hydrocarbon fields in Asia-in March 2007, but is now pumping around 670,000 Mcf/d. The field, discovered in the late 1990s in Bangladesh's northeastern Syl-het district, now accounts for around one-third of the country's total daily gas output.
