Royal Dutch Shell is preparing to start seismic work in the Barun-Yustinsky area of the Russian republic of Kalmykiya as part of plans to boost its Russian presence. The Anglo-Dutch supermajor plans to drill one exploration well in the field, estimated at $100 million, Evgeny Boyarshin, the head of Shell Neftegaz Development, was quoted as telling public hearings on drilling in Kalmykiya, which lies on the northern Caspian. He said the well will be drilled to a depth of 7,000 meters sometime in the next five years after Shell completes 2-D and 3-D seismic work at Barun-Yustinsky, which spans more than 2,500 sq km.
