The 11th Gulf Petrochemical and Chemical Association's (GPCA) annual forum took place recently in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The key takeaway is chemical producers in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, hurt by the dynamics of change, need to reform, consolidate, and diversify into specialties in order to survive. The more than 2,000 registered delegates heard powerful addresses from Sultan al-Jaber, minister of state and CEO of Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC); Yousef al-Benyan, CEO of SABIC and chairman of GPCA; Abdulaziz al-Judaimi, head/downstream at Saudi Aramco; and Jim Fitterling, president and chief operating officer of Dow Chemical.
