BASF Targets Leadership in Li-Ion Battery Materials

BASF aims to become the world's leading system supplier of functional materials for high-performance batteries. "We have taken a major stride closer to achieving our goal of becoming the leading supplier of functional materials and components for existing and future lithium-ion batteries," says Ralf Meix-ner, senior v.p./battery materials at BASF. The company currently has production centers in Europe, U.S., and Asia/Pacific. It will operate, later this year, its first production plant for cathode materials, which will be located at Elyria, OH. The facility, with an investment of almost $50 million, will be the largest of its type in North America.
