Pheromone trapping of two major pests of palms in Nigeria

Bucket traps containing 9mg/day Oryctes monoceros pheromone and insecticide-impregnated organic matter were evaluated by the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) date palm field at Dutse, Jigawa state, Nigeria. Pheromone enhanced with sugar cane and cow dung caught 30 beetles from 25 observations, while pheromone enhanced with pieces of palm fronds and cow dung caught 22 and that enhanced with sugar cane caught 15. The traps without pheromone caught none. The differences were significant(PO.05). Traps containing 3mg/day Rhynchophorus phoenicis pheromone were also set up on a replanted oil palm field in NIFOR, Benin City. Catches from the pheromone enhanced with oil palm bunch refuse caught 84 from 50 observations, while that enhanced with cloth caught 10. The control, oil palm bunch refuse alone, caught none (PO.05). Pheromone based mass trapping could thus help to protect palms from damage by O. monoceros and R. phoenicis in Nigeria.
