The authors of this article explain how experimental models are useful for gaining a deeper understanding of a machine's behaviour, in particular under operating conditions where data are hard to be obtain. In doing so, these models can be used to improve monitoring and diagnostics. The first installment, which appears here, looks at virtual models of rotating machines - dealing with both bending and torsional vibration analysis. The second part, which will be published in the June 2009 issue of Condition Monitor newsletter, covers the simulation of a chain transmission and provides details of modal analysis of virtual models.
