Structural Theory of Phyllotaxis: II. Interrelation between Lower and Higher Forms of Phyllotaxis

Opposite phyllotaxis is defined as higher with respect to alternate phyllotaxis, and whorled phyllotaxis as higher with respect to opposite phyllotaxis. The mechanisms giving rise to higher and lower forms of phyllotaxis are discussed in terms of the notions developed to describe the properties of plant primordia and embryos. Higher forms of phyllotaxis are shown to be additive combinations of lower ones, into which they can split under certain experimental conditions. Examples of split phyllotaxis occasionally found in nature are described.
