Detection of vehicle crossing path at intersection and aged drivers --visual search performance of aged drivers

The frequency of aged driver's fatal accidents happened at well visibility intersection is not so small.In this study, causative factors of aged drivers in these types of intersection accident are examinedfrom the point of visual search performance. It is shown that the search performance of non collidingvehicles within the peripheral visual field has no relation to a driver's age, and such vehicle can bedetected easily. But the detection of colliding vehicles within the peripheral visual field becomes moredifficult for aged drivers However, there is no age difference in the search performance when usingcentral visual field. It can be said that checking behavior with horizontal eye movement at with goodvisibility intersections is more important for aged drivers.
