A study was carried out during 1999-2000 in Italy with melon (cv. Drake), using fertigation. In 1999, N was applied at a rate of 61 kg/ha, either as Ca(NO3)2 or as KNO3. In 2000, Ca(NO3)2 was applied at rates of 48 and 70 kg/ha. Fruits were picked at 3 intervals and stored either for 3 days at room temperature (1), for 10 days at 4?C (2), and a combination of 2 + 1. The calcium nitrate fertilizer resulted in firmer fruits in the 2nd and 3rd picking, but softer fruits in the 1st picking. Firmest fruits were obtained with 70 kg/ha. Cold-stored fruit (2) proved firmer in 1999, but not in 2000. Sugar content was not significantly affected by the rate and type of fertilizer, but was generally higher in cold-stored fruit. None of the factors influencedthe colour of the flesh.
