Analysis of Image Compression Algorithm using DCT and DWT

摘要

Image compression is a commonly used technique for removing the redundant information from the image. This paper presents a comparison of two image compression techniques which consist of two different transforms such as discrete cosine transform and the conventional discrete wavelet transform. Encoding techniques like Set Partitioning hierarchical trees (SPIHT) and Huffman coding are also employed to achieve the image compression. The performances of the proposed algorithms are measured using PSNR, MSE and Compression Ratio. Results reveal that the compression ratio of the discrete wavelet transform is more, compared discrete cosine transform, where as the highest PSNR value is obtained by discrete cosine transform.
