A new and elegant technique of digital instrumentation has been adopted in the 'Design and Development of Heart Beat Monitors' which inhibit the drawbacks of the conventional methods normally employed for measuring heart beats in clinics. in this instrument a pulse sensor, amplifier, comparator, multivibrator, power amplifier, counting and display units have been used as building blocks. The specific circuitry employs five seven segmental display units-two for indicating time in seconds and three for displaying heart beats, arranged side by side in the same plane. Provision is also made for continuous indication of heart beat by flashing light in synchronism with each pulse and an audible beep tone with volume control for pulse rhythm. The designed circuitry offers high degree of accuracy, resolution upto I beat and prevents the creepage of errors where unskilled personnel are required to make measurements. This aesthetically designed instrument has got many salient features such as low power consumption fast response, compactness, portability, ease of operation besides being patient friendly.
