Over the past decade, there has been an increasing awarenes: that the quality of medical care delivered in the United States defined as the delivery of effective, timely, safe, equitable efficient, and patient-centered medical care, has the potentia for improvement (1).Consistent with this focus on healthcare quality, the Amer ican College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF) and th< American Heart Association (AHA) have taken a leadershi] role in defining "what works in medicine" with their ACCF AHA guidelines statements, as well as in developing perfor mance measures that define what should or should not bi done in the care of patients with cardiovascular diseasi (Table 1).
