World Hunger and Movements to Stop It!

The persistence of hunger and its growing impact on suffering in the world isdisheartening. As seen in Figure1, for the first time in human history, the number of people living with chronic hunger is expected to pass 1,000,000,000,000 (one billion) within this calendar year (1)! In the midst of many ongoing crises in the world today, hunger and undernourishment are leading causes of poor health. In February 2010, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations reported that 33 countries currently face a food security crisis; moreover, 14 of them have been in this situation for more than a decade (2).
