Director of the Institute of Mining of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor M. V. Kurlenya is an outstanding Russian scientist, recognized leader in the filed of mining sciences, and head of the largest scientific school of geomechanics and mineral mining technology. He is one of those scientists whose names belong to the history of our science.In 1953 M. V. Kurlenya graduated from Tomsk Polytechnical Institute, after post-graduate study, he worked as an assistant lecturer till 1960, and then was invited to the Institute of Mining, Siberian Branch, the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1962 Mr. Kurlenya defended his Candidate Thesis on rock-pressure control by goaf stowing or caving of enclosing rocks in mining the steeply pitching seams of the Kuznetsk Coal Basin. His Doctor Thesis (1973) devoted to the experimental methods for determining the stresses in sedimentary rocks made an essential contribution to the formation of a new friend of rock mechanics-geomechanics. Being at the sources of present-day geomechanics, M. V. Kurlenya is one of the first who began to use widely the methods of mathematical modeling in mining sciences. His works ensured the development of this field of knowledge. Fundamental researches conducted by M. V. Kurlenya favored the origin and development of a number of new scientific trends which are important for theory and practice of mining the complex deposits. One of the significant results obtained by M. V. Kurlenya with his colleagues in 1991 was the discovery of the phenomenon of zonal disintegration of rocks around underground workings under conditions of great depths.
