As national concern grows over the adequacy of patient .safety measures in US acute care hospitals, recent technological advances in infusion therapy may provide a means by which the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) can help promote risk-reduction efforts for patients receiving parenteral care. A class of computerized patient infusion devices that include design features for administration error prevention and data collection (called "Smart Pumps") are evolving into a valuable clinical tool that may hold great potential to decrease the rate of medication errors in healthcare facilities.1
