Effects of a persimmon leaf methanol extract (PLME) and persimmon fruit methanol extract (PFME) on acute ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity in C57BL/6 male mice, gavaged with or without persimmon extracts for 1 wk, were determined. Hepatotoxicity was induced in mice by gavage of 5 g/kg body wt. of ethanol. After 12 h of ethanol administration, blood and liver tissue were collected and analysed for biochemical markers of hepatotoxicity. Results showed that PLME and PFME treatments decreased the activities of blood alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase compared with the ethanol control. PLME and PFME also reduced blood lactate dehydrogenase activity but elevated alcohol dehydrogenase activity. Blood triglycerides and hepatic cholesterol levels decreased markedly when treated with PLME and PFME, and liver malondialdehyde levels decreased markedly compared with the ethanol control. Administration of PLME and PFME increased the activities of catalase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase.
