Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapists continually hear good reports about the quality of the therapeutic approach from their clients. However, what truly helps an EMDR therapist to grow is to step back from their own work and connect with the subjective, human experience of someone else's client. We often do this through case consultations and conference presentations. Within our agencies, we may have the chance of talking to a colleague's client in the scheduling area or in a treatment group. I found a most entertaining and insightful way of making a connection in Lily Burana's autobiographical I Love a Man in Uniform: A Memoir of Love, War, and Other Battles.
