Chinese electricity production surged in July, to meet cooling requirements during a heatwave that pushed temperatures in Shanghai to over 40°C. But coal demand growth appears to be slowing. Total electricity production exceeded 15 TWh/day during July. Thermal power output, largely from coal-fired plants, accounted for 80pc of electricity production, or 12.1 TWh/day — equivalent to an earlier record set in January this year and 8pc up on July 2012.
