Summer demand drives Japan’s LNG consumption

Thermal coal consumption by Japan’s main utilities in July increased 15pc from a year earlier, driven by stronger demand for air-conditioning with a run of above-average summer temperatures. Average temperatures for July in the Tokyo metropolitan area were 27.3°C, higher by 1.5°C than the long-term average. Temperatures were higher throughout Japan, creating the stronger electricity demand for air-conditioning purposes.
