I recently stopped by a trade show booth where a new antimicrobial chemical was being promoted. I asked a seemingly simple question: "What's in the bottle?" The enthusiastic salesman replied, "Our formulation is an EPA-registered chemical that is proven to be the most effective way of killing mold." I tried asking it a different way. "What is the primary active ingredient in your antimicrobial?" The follow-up answer was even more obtuse. "We have a proprietary formula that was developed by our research scientists." Seeing I was going nowhere fast, a kind stranger tapped me on the shoulder and said, "They use hydrogen peroxide."
