After graduating from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan, in 1972, I had no idea as to what direction my career would evolve. I had an interest in hematology and immunology but minimal research experience. Following my internship in internal medicine at the University of California, San Diego, I joined the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a Research Associate in the U.S. Public Health Service for my first intensive exposure to basic science. I worked in the Laboratory of Microbiology and Immunology at the National Institute of Dental Research, mentored by Drs. Joost Oppenheim and David Rosenstreich. Under the mentorship of these outstanding scientists, I learned basic cellular immunology, which influenced all of my future career decisions. My next major career decision was my fellowship in Hematology/ Oncology and once again I "stumbled" into an ideal environment.
