Diesel particulate is a major source of respirable particulate,which can be inhaled and affect human health seriously.The particles emitted by diesel vehicles are mainly of submicron scale.Upon emission into the atmosphere the particles coagulate with each other and may finally be inhaled or deposit on surfaces.The retention period in air is a measure of how likely they can be inhaled by humans.
