The Structural Materials Division Symposium: Mechanical Behavior of Nanostructured Materials, honoring Carl Koch on the occasion of his 70th birthday, was held during the TMS 2007 Annual Meeting from February 26 to March 1 in Orlando, Florida. This symposium honored Koch for his outstanding contributions to many fields in materials science and engineering in the last 40 years. In particular, his pioneering research in the areas of synthesis and processing of nanostructured and amorphous materials using mechanical milling has led to new paradigms in the field of nanomaterials. His recent research has focused on the synthesis, microstructure, and mechanical behavior of bulk nanostructured materials. The symposium focused on experimental, theoretical, and computational studies related to nanostructured materials in the form of bulk, thin films and coatings. Seven sessions and one poster session (with more than 40 posters) were presented in the following areas: Fatigue and Strengthening Mechanisms at Small Length Scale: Julia Weert-man (Northwestern University) gave the keynote. Invited speakers included Oliver Kraft and Cynthia Volkert (Forschun-gszentrum Karlsruhe, Germany), Subra Suresh and Ming Dao (Massachusetts Institute of Technology [MIT]), Ronald Scattergood (North Carolina State University), and Ricardo Schwarz (Los Alamos National Laboratory).
