A naerobic disgestion is a biological waste and wastewater treatment process that produces methane as a by-product It is more and more largely used in wastewater treatment plants, often in combination with activated sludge. One of the main drawback of the anaerobic digestion is its sensitivity to instability : without appropriate control action, the process can easily be led to a wash-out (i.e. a state where the bacteria have died and been removed from the reactor) under the action of varying influent waste concentration or influent flow rate, via the accumulation of volatile fatty acids.
