Modelling and control are important tools in to achieve mg improved operation of activated sludge plants, which is required by stricter legislation for nitrogen removal from wastewater. This paper presents a state-of-the-art overview on modelling and control of activated sludge plants. With respect to plant modelling, emphasis is put on Activated Sludge Model No.1 (ASM1). Methods for calibration of models based on ASM1 to describe actual plants are reviewed. Approaches to reduce ASM1 to obtain models that are suitable for control are discussed. Finally, controller design is discussed, focusing on optimising, model based control. Some results of studies to application of Model Predictive Control (MPC) are presented.
