Characteristics and Applications of Metal Matrix Composites

摘要

Metal matrix composites (designated as MMCs) containing ceramics and self-lubricating materials in metal matrixes retain properties of metals used as a matrix while offering sliding properties unobtainable when metals are used alone. Such materials are used in different industries. In particular, such materials are being implemented in automobiles and transportation mechanism and contribute to their weight reduction and to a prolongation of their service life. In the present work, types of MMCs, their production processes, and their basic mechanical properties are outlined. Typical friction-and-wear properties and mechanisms involved are considered, and examples of MMC applications are discussed.
