Bearing life resulted from higher load and longer life of future diesel engines

The bearing life was experimentally studied under conditions of higher loads and longer service life of diesel engines by using a real engine and a tester. Obtained results showed that (1) in tests performed under higher loads the Pb-base overlay developed the fatigue state at the initial stage and thereafter wear of the overlay advanced, which resulted in the exposure of the intermediate layer of Ni and in the intensive development of seizure and when the Ni intermediate layer was not present the seizure developed intensively in bearings due to substrate Cu-Pb alloy. Besides, it was found that (2) the life of bearings resulting from comparatively high loading conditions was determined by wear of overlay followed after fatigue or corrosion of bearings made of Cu-Pb alloy and provided with Pb-base overlay traditionally used as good bearing materials at comparatively early stages. At later operation stages, cavities appeared in lining due to corrosion of Pb from lining the substrate of which was Cu-Pb alloy. As a result, the buckling of lining occurred and seizure developed. Obtained results allowed to clarify problems related to higher loads and longer life of bearings aimed at in future diesel engines and indicated that traditional Cu-Pb alloy bearings would not meet the requirements.
