Structural changes in surface films were observed on a slider-on-disk type low-load friction tester using Langmuir-Blodgett film (LB film) as a boundary film model. TOFSIMS and IR-RAS analyses showed that friction low-load conditions were destructive for regular molecular order of barium stearate LB films. Also, in LB films of fatty acids that contained fluorine in principal chains, similar destruction of film structure accompanied by the transfer of components of the Al{sub}2O{sub}3-TiC slider to the disk surface was observed. However, in barium stearate LB films, the material transfer was not found. In addition, in the case of fluorine-containing LB films, secondary ion fragments originated by products of reaction between slider and film molecules were observed. This fact indicated that tribochemical reaction occurred on the friction surface and products of the reaction were transferred.
