Oil temperature control for hydraulic statical bearings supporting the large scale telescope 'SUBARU'

PID control coefficients that were determined by a simulation on a personal computer allowed actual equipment to function correctly and to accomplish the regulation in a reasonable time period. The structure of the SUBARU telescope includes an extended base plate and AZ bearings placed under the flooring, and the observation room and the telescope tube room in which EL bearings are located are separated by a wall. This excludes the effect of a temperature difference on observations. Consequently, it remains unclear to what extent the difficult oil temperature control is eased, but it is clear that the temperature control has been used for several years and has shown a good efficiency in machine tools and other applications.
