Alumina Medium Term -- Capacity and Industry Structure

Table 6 shows that at the end of 2007 world alumina capacity was 92.0 million tonnes in 82 plants, of which 7.2 million tonnes was for non-metallurgical alumina. Table 7 lists all committed changes to alumina capacity. The projects will add 24.5 million tonnes (27 percent ) to alumina capacity, of which 8.9m tonnes was scheduled to start up in 2008. This comes on top of an increase of 8m tonnes in 2007and is a very large planned increase by normal standards.
