Decorating window glass has, until now, always been a manual and time consuming task. This is set to change, however, with the development of two new machines. Motion oriented machine controllers from Baldor are being used to automate the application of decoration to window glass. CADRAM and R&R Sondermaschinen have developed the machines for applying the decoration using either lead or bevel-effect 3M Accentrim tape. The concept for the machines started over two years ago by CADRAM following a commission from 3M to provide an automated tape laying solution for Accentrim tape. The company began by developing its control ideas using a PLC. But, it found that the programming language was restrictive when it came to implementing some of the movements and handling the geometric calculations required when changing tools and directions. Looking for an alternative solution, the company turned to Baldor and its NextMove motion controllers.
