Legislation, stakeholder codes of practice and client specifications have already affected crop protection methods, irrigation and energy use. In the edibles sector, growers have had to re-evaluate their approaches to plant nutrition and now ornamentals growers, too, face new decisions about fertiliser choices.The move to organic fertilisers has so far had little impact on ornamentals growers. But as marketing manager Wally Milton of the national sundries supplier Avoncrop points out, edible herbs are fast becoming the must-grow nursery crop, "Organic fertilisers are increasingly reliable alternatives and are now the fastest-growing products in the edible herbs sector," he says.
