Tulipa

Tulips are one of the most popular spring-flowering bulbs and provide a riot of colour in borders and containers. Sadly, public spending cuts mean that local authorities are ordering fewer bulbs this season and such displays are likely to be rarer inparks next spring. Perhaps now is the time to reconsider repeat-flowering forms - the Darwin hybrids and species tulips. Tulips were introduced to Europe from Turkey in the 16th century and for much of the time since have been an important crop in Holland. They used to be produced in large numbers in an area known as South Holland in Spalding, Lincolnshire, but many growers have now been replaced by food crop and daffodil growers, food processors and flower packers.
