Alys Fowler finds out why investing in breeding is at the heart of Danish turf firm DLF's business strategy. According to its slogan, DLF is "seeding the world". The seed-breeding firm dominates Europe and has around 20 per cent of the global cool-season grass market. Its takeover rate of other seed breeders has been methodical and strategic, bringing steady growth in size and structure With major roles in France, Germany, Denmark and the UK and a growing profile in the Eastern European and Asian markets, DLF doesn't rest on its laurels. The firm has a strong brand identity and is high on the Sports Turf Research Institute's (STRI) Bingley list for sports and hobby turf. The UK branch, DLF Perryfield, based in Worcestershire, includes the brands Johnson, Techni Turf, TopGreen and Oliver Seeds. Clients include local authorities, landscap-ers, supermarkets and the sports sector.
