USING YOUR GREENHOUSE

Last issue I provided some guidance in choosing the right greenhouse. Now I'm going to share some of the uses of a greenhouse. Everything I say applies to smaller growing spaces, such as a kitchen window or outside single-wall structure, most commonlycalled a cold frame. The climate in your greenhouse has to match what you like to grow. This obvious statement is surprisingly misunderstood. While it is possible to grow tomatoes in winter and orchids as they grow wild on trees in Hawaii, those plantsrespond best in their favorite climate and may fail utterly in the wrong climate. So too, your efforts will be best rewarded if all the plants in your greenhouse share the same climatic requirements. A practical alternative is one or more smaller structures within your greenhouse in which you can tailor the climate for a few plants. These interior mini-greenhouses need not be very strong structurally because they never have a snow load nor are they exposed to strong winds.
