Taiwan is expected to join the nuclear-phaseout camp any day now, boosting already growing LNG demand - just as state CPC is facing the possible end to its loss-making LNG import monopoly and state electric utility Taipower is eyeing construction of its own import terminal. Bowing to strong anti-nuclear sentiment in the wake of Japan's Fukushima disaster, the government is expected to unveil within weeks a new energy policy prohibiting the extension of nuclear plant operating licenses beyond 40 years. It could even order shutdowns prior before license expiry, although this seems unlikely.
