A new strategy based on respirometry for the control of the anaerobic period duration of an SBR bio-P process with a rapid-fill mode of operation was developed. Samples were withdrawn every 15 minutes from a lab-scale SBR during the anaerobic period and aerated intermittently in order to determine the respiration rate. The time of disappearance of the rapidly biodegradable substrate (acetate) was determined by the fall observed in the respiration rate. It was shown that, respirometry can be used not only for the characterization and control of aerobic processes, but also for the control of the anaerobic period duration of an SBR bio-P process.
