Adding Value to Spent Mushroom Compost

Emma's presentation, given at the 2004 Mushroom Industry Conference on 28th October 2004, related to some of the work funded by the EU project RECOVEG carried out at Warwick HRI and INRA in France by herself, Ralph Noble and Claude Alabouvette and isreproduced here ad verbatim. A brief introduction and background to the work is presented in relation to the volume of waste produced and the EU Landfill Directive which has had an impact on how biodegradable waste is and will be disposed of in the future. Work relating to the use of spent mushroom compost (SMC) and other composted wastes to suppress different soil-borne pathogens is described and the potential of SMC for use in plant disease suppression is discussed.
