VOLKSWAGEN's RALLYING aspirations with the Golf were, until 1990, confined to the second division. In contrast to Audi, which aimed for, and achieved, outright wins aimed for, and achieved, outright wins and world championships with the all-conquering quattro, Volkswagen set its sights somewhat lower. It competed with cars which had only two-wheel drive and remained fairly close to the production model, aiming only for class wins and national (inside of world) championships.
