AT THE TURN OF the millennium, while he was still in the position of CEO of Volkswagen, Ferdinand Piech declared that the company would build a car capable of travelling 100 km for every litre of fuel consumed (282 mpg)! Volkswagen had already developed a 'three-litre' car - a Lupo capable of travelling 100 km per three litres of fuel consumed. That's 94mpg. So, although 282 mpg seemed a tall order indeed, a 'one-litre' car - just one - was built, and Piech himself drove it to his last AGM as CEO, achieving a consumption of 0.89 l/100 km (317 mpg) in the process. The unique one-litre car has languished in a museum ever since, but a resurrection of the topic is merited, because just a few months ago, in late spring, Ferdinand Piech, in his current capacity as supervisory board chairman, declared that Volkswagen will at last be building a one-litre car, within the next three or four years.
