IN THE PAST, none of the hot Polos have particularly impressed me. Although some of them have had relatively high-output engines, none has had the all-round ability to match the power. Until now. The new Polo GTI is a very impressive piece of machinery and only the fact that its big brother, the Golf GTI, is so successful, will cloud the awareness that this is a great performance hatchback. In my opinion, it is the best handling Polo yet, the ride quite comfortable, the handling sharp and precise. It is a good example of the level of development which has been going into the running gear of Volkswagens in the past two or three years.
