Titan Technologies (3206 Candelaria N. E., Albuquerque, NM 87107; Tel: 505/884-0272, Fax: 505/881-7113) is turning automobile tires into activated carbon at its third commercial recycling plant. The full-scale recycling operation built at Taipei Hsine, Taiwan, uses Titan's low-temperature pyrolysis combined with a catalyst to recover oil, scrap steel, and carbon black from cast-off tires. The lower processing temperature, less than half the temperature of conventional pyrolysis, allows the recovery of basic tire components in "something approaching virgin form," Titan researchers assert. Competing systems, operating at 1,000 deg F or more, generate large amounts of ash that often contaminate out-put.
