Bandages are designed to cover and treat wounds, prevent swelling, or temporarily stabilize a limb. To prevent potential wound complications from developing, it is important that veterinary technicians know how to apply a bandage correctly. The most common type of bandage used for small animal orthopedic patients is the Schanz padded wrap, also known as the modified Robert Jones bandage. This bandage provides light compression and partial immobilization to limit displacement of fractured bones. It also is used to reduce soft-tissue swelling or provide temporary stability to a limb before or after surgery.
