Mrs. Harris brings her 11/2-year-old male Yorkshire terrier, Lou, to your clinic for a physical examination. She reports that Lou seems to be in general good health; however, a small amount of blood is occasionally noticed in his urine. The initial examination reveals no abnormalities. Dr. Donna requests a complete blood cell count, chemistry profile, urinalysis, and abdominal radiography. The radiographs reveal an abnormally small liver. Hematology test results indicate a mild nonregenerative anemia. Microcytes and codocytes, which are commonly referred to as target cells, are noted on the peripheral blood film. Chemistry test results indicate low blood urea nitrogen and albumin. Ammonium biurate crystals are noted on the urine sediment examination. All other test results are within normal limits.
