The Small Animal Neurologic Examination: A Practical Guide

The neurologic examination helps determine if neurologic disease is present; it cannot be used to determine the cause of disease; Other diagnostic tests should be conducted in conjunction with the neurologic examination so that other disease processesare not overlooked. The purpose of a neurologic examination is to answer two basic questions: Does this animal have neurologic disease? You should be able to answer yes or no (not maybe) to this question after completing your neurologic examination. Ifthere is a problem, what is the anatomic location? Based on the location of the abnormal responses or observations, you should be able to localize the problem (lesion) broadly to the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral neuromusculature.
