HONG Kong's roads have one of the highest vehicle densities in the world. In September 2003, there were more than 522,745 licensed vehicles and only 1,932 km of roads. The high vehicle density combined with difficult terrain and dense building development, imposes a constant challenge to the road builders to cope with the ever-increasing transport demands. A new highway, including significant tunnel sections, in the New Territories will help alleviate some of the motoring 'bottlenecks'. Route 8 (formerly known as Route 9) is a high-capacity trunk road linking Lantau Island, Kwai Ching, West Kowloon and the Northeast New Territories. The North Lantau Highway and Lantau Link, which form part of the Route, were opened to traffic in 1997.The remaining sections, now under construction, include the road between Tsing Yi and Cheung Sha Wan and the section linking Cheung Sha Wan and Sha Tin, which includes the Eagles Nest and Sha Tin Heights tunnel sections, and is a 6 km long dual 3-lane highway.
